Faculty of Engineering


General information

 INTRODUCTION
Since its creation in 1968, the Faculty of Engineering has fulfilled its initial mission of training technicians and engineers, in various fields, who have contributed significantly in the first phase of the industrial development of Mauritius. Up to June 1999, about 600 students were awarded degrees in engineering, computer science and textile technology and over 1200 were awarded diplomas/certificates.
 MISSION STATEMENT

The mission statement of the Faculty is to provide high quality education at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, to develop excellence in research, to foster industry/faculty partnerships and to contribute to the development and application of technology for the advancement and welfare of the community at large. The objectives that have been set out are as follows:

  • To consolidate and strengthen undergraduate programmes by providng the necessary human and learning resources.
  • To continually review existing courses and divise new ones in order to meet the changing needs of industry and of the country at large.
  • To develop further the capacity for postgraduate studies and research
  • To ensure national and international recognition of our courses through an accreditation scheme with the relevant certifying bodies.
  • To promote professionalism and entrepreneurial skills amongst graduating students with a view to enhance employment opportunites.
  • To provide continuing education opportunities for professionals through the organisation of seminars/workshops and short course.
  • To increase consultancy and research activities by stimulating more communication between the partners involved, namely, industry, government service and industrial organisations such as SMIDO, EPZDA, ETC.
  • To diversify linkages with overseas universities.
  PROGRAMMES

With the experience of the past years, the Fauclty has adopted a multidisciplinary appraoch to ensure that University of Mauritius graduates possess skills relevant to, and up-to-date with, the world of professional practice. Therefore, in order to cater for new market trends, the core programmes have been reviewed to include new options such as Chemical and Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering with the Built Environment, Civil Engineering with Environmental Engineering, Electronic and Communication Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering and Mechatronics.

The new degree programmes also incorporate modules in management, economics, accounting, information technology and communication skills with the aim of providing future engineers with the necessary tools in the discharge of thier duties.
