Faculty of Social Studies & Humanities

Department of Economics & Statistics

Overview of Department

Welcome to the Department of Economics and Statistics (DES), University of Mauritius. The DES, located in the Faculty of Social Studies and Humanities, is composed of a vibrant group of 16 full-time staff actively involved in teaching, research and consultancies. The department comprises 2 units, namely Economics Unit and Statistics Unit (see list of staff members below). The DES strives for excellence in the classroom! With respect to research, the staff is heavily involved in carrying out applied and theoretical investigations that are published in refereed journals in the profession. Besides these, members are also committed to some administrative responsibilities, provide consultancy services and serve on several committees and advisory panels at the national and international level. The Department's undergraduate and post-graduate student enrollment continues its long-term upward trend. Our students have many opportunities to expand their academic activities beyond coursework, including participating in research projects supervised by the DES staff. Career opportunities abound for our graduates who have found professional homes in both the public (local government agencies) and private (banking, consulting, retail) sectors. In addition, a degree in Economics is an excellent springboard for graduate school, including among others economics, law, Master in Public Policy and Administration or MBA programmes. The Department also offers doctoral training in Economics for prospective students. The MPhil/PhD programme is structured to develop high quality research and teaching skills. It prepares students for academic positions in colleges and universities and for advanced research positions in the government sector, non-government organizations and private sector. Likewise, our Master's programmes prepare students for a wide range of consulting and applied research positions in private industry and government, as well as teaching positions. The job market for economists at all levels has been excellent and our graduates have obtained positions in Mauritius and abroad.
