The DES has presently 4 full time and 7 part time research students. PhD degrees require approximately three to four years of full time study and five to seven years of part time study. A research student is expected to give a seminar at least once a year.
SUPERVISION
The DES provides research students with a supervisor. When there is overlapping of areas, students are assigned two supervisors either in the department or across departments. Students can expect to form a close working relationship with supervisor/s, meeting regularly throughout their time in the department and submitting consistent and regular research report at least once every six months. All students are initially registered for the MPhil degree. The change from MPhil to PhD status occurs as a result of comprehensive progress report, which will be assessed by an independent external assessor. A good PhD thesis supported by supervisor/s and two external examiners qualifies for the award.
RESEARCH INTERESTS
The breadth and depth of the Department's research interests are reflected in the doctoral work completed over the years. Current PhD projects include: foreign direct investment, trade and economic development; regional integration and growth; the impact of trade liberalization on economic performance; labour market dynamics; fiscal federalism and decentralization; transport development; income distribution and globalisation; and environmental management.
