The Timely Tips help students gain practical tips and strategies to help them cope with the demands of university and connect with valuable resources that can contribute to their success.

Read the tips carefully and follow them. They will surely help you start the term off on the right track and may prevent a few headaches later on!

1. Make a file folder for university correspondence and keep it in a safe place. Don’t throw away any correspondence you receive from the university and keep copies of all correspondence you give to the university. Even if something seems unimportant at the time, you may need to refer to it or use it as a form of proof some time in the future.

2. If you encounter difficulties while trying to register, contact the administrative staff or registry of your respective Faculty. The Faculty staff will be able to either assist you directly or refer you to someone who can. Do not wait to get help; waiting can lead to problems that could have been avoided.

3. Keep your UoM Student ID card safely. You will need a valid UoM Student ID for many things, such as to use the libraries, ride the shuttle bus, write exams or get any personal information from Faculty or University records if ever the need arises.

4. Don’t drop a module on the online module registration system until you are absolutely certain that you do not want to take that module. If you aren't sure which courses you need for your degree requirements, be sure to meet with your programme/course coordinator or Head of Department.

5. Before classes begin, visit your department and tour your classroom locations. You’ll prevent last minute frazzles on the first day of class!

6. Attend the New Student Programme’s orientation events, as well as any faculty, department, or student orientation activities that relate to you. Orientation activities help you connect with people and services that can make a big difference in how well you adjust to university work and life.

7. Use the UoM website (http://www.uom.ac.mu) for up-to-date and accurate information such as course cancellations and the time and location of special events, university phone numbers or office locations, and information about upcoming events.

8. Find out if your department has a student association and get involved, or join a club on campus. You’ll meet new people, develop useful skills and, believe it or not, there will be a positive effect on your academic performance!

9. Sign up for a sports and recreational activities at the on-campus gymnasium. Making time for physical fitness will have a positive impact on your mental and emotional well-being, not to mention it’s fun and a great way to meet new people.

10. Consult at all times the General Information to Students Handbook to learn about rules and regulations out and use UoM’s helping and support services.
