Participation of UoM in the ‘Cross-National Higher Education Performance (Efficiency) Indicators Project

The Cross-National Higher Education Performance (Efficiency) Indicators Project was coordinated by the Centre for Higher Education Transformation (CHET). It entailed an intellectual endeavour to better understand efficiency measurements in higher education in Africa, accompanied by the building of capacity and an increased awareness of efficiency issues in participating countries. Data pertaining to the UoM qualifications, Student Enrolment/Student Output/ Staff Population/ Financial Status of the past seven years (2000/01 – 2006/07) were worked out and forwarded to CHET in November 2008 and further reviewed and submitted in January 2009 and May 2009. A workshop was also carried out at the Spier Estate, Stellenbosch, South Africa from 30-31 March 2009 in the context of the above project.

EPA-funding for Entrepreneurship

The University was successful in its bid for a grant from the EPA (Education Partnerships in Africa) and the British Council to set up a programme for teaching a module in Entrepreneurship to undergraduate students. The project’s title is as follows: Progression from employability enhancing skills acquired through Work-based Learning (WBL) to embedding a core module in Entrepreneurship and Social Enterprise in all undergraduate programmes offered by the University. A turn key programme will be developed with the collaboration of the project partner from University of Bradford with the objective to allow students to develop their entrepreneurial potential and thereby enhancing further their employability.

Logistics Management Workshop

A short course in Logistics Management was offered, in collaboration with the Faculty of Law and Management for professionals in the logistics as well as for those aspiring to start a career in logistics management. The objectives were to: explain the principles of Logistics and Supply Chain Management; assess the importance of good logistics management within an organisation and within an economy; understand the different IT applications in logistics and analyse the integration process of logistics and supply chain within an organisation. High calibre resource persons from the private sector were involved in the delivery.

Twinning Project with the Seychelles on e-learning.

Two UoM e-learning experts undertook a study of the present situation in Seychelles and made necessary recommendations for the Seychelles to kick-off e-learning at National Level. 5 teacher trainers from Seychelles attended a one-week seminar on e-learning at the VCILT, University of Mauritius.

Participation of UoM in the Higher Education and Development Project

The Higher Education and Development Project was also coordinated by the Centre for Higher Education Transformation (CHET) and it investigated the complex relationships between higher education and development in the African Context. These relationships were explored through the lens of the three forms of ‘development’ namely, economic development, poverty reduction and democratic development. The Research Team visited the University from 3-5 March 2009 during which members of the Senior Management, Project leaders, representatives of the Ministry of Education & Human Resource and the Ministry of Finance and Economic Empowerment were interviewed. A seminar on ‘Research in Higher Education in Africa’ was also held by the Research team on 5 March 2009.

Hall of Residence

The Hall of Residence is a project which has been initiated under additional Government Grants for the 2008/2009 financial year. In line with its strategy to enhance the recruitment of international students, the UoM launched on 27 February 2009 a project for the provision of a 100-room on-campus residence. The Hall of Residence will accommodate both foreign and local interested students on a rent basis as well as frequent visitors, visiting lecturers, external examiners and other guests coming to the University. In May 2009, a contract value of Rs5, 900,000 was awarded to Francis Wong Associates Ltd for consultancy services for the design, procurement and supervision of construction of a Hall of Residence, which would be sited near the University Farm. The project is expected to be completed in 2011.

Brainstorming Session

The Public Relations office supported the London Cheshire Home Initiative for a brainstorming session for physically handicapped issues at the Physically Handicapped Welfare Association Centre (Rhill) from Africa. The Public Relations Office mobilised UoM physically impaired students to attend the session, and kept a close follow up of the action taken.The outcome of which is that a physically handicapped student of Faculty of Engeeneering was selected and sponsored to represent the Young Voices of Mauritius at a workshop in Africa.

The University of Mauritius redesigned its annual celebration of the National Day which was held this year on 11 march 2009 in the Paul Octave wiehe Auditorium.The event was marked by solemnity as well as cheerfullness The National anthem played by the national Police Band, sung by a professional artist and signed by a hearing impaired student, the national flag raised by students imparted astong sense of patriotism.The event was coordinated by the Public Relations Office with the help of dedicated staff of the university. Dr The Hon. V K Bunwaree, Minister of Education, Culture & Human Resources graced the ceremony.

Graduation Ceremonies

In March and June 2009, graduation ceremonies were held for a total of 876 students amongst which there were 9 awards for Doctor of Philosophy, 5 Master of Philosophy, 415 Master’s degrees, 344 Bachelor’s degrees and 103 Diplomas.

The Graduation Ceremony held on 22 June 2009 marked the collaboration between the University of Mauritius and the University of Technology, Mauritius with a joint award, namely the MSc Sustainable Environmental Management.

The University’s output in terms of awardees for the year 2008/2009 amounted to a total of 2350.

Industrial Waste Audit (Public Sector)

Following the promulgation of the Industrial Waste Audit Regulation under the Environment Protection Act 2002 by the Ministry of Environment and NDU, the University of Mauritius (Faculty of Engineering) was approached for mounting a short course on Industrial Waste Audit, to provide public officers a theoretical and practical background to enable professionals in that field implement the Act.

The course was run under the aegis of CPDL. Twenty professionals from related Ministries were sponsored by the Ministry of Environment and NDU.

Workshop: Policies and Instruments for Successful Exports

The University of Mauritius (Faculty of Law and Management and Centre for Professional Development and Lifelong Learning) in collaboration with UNCTAD’s Virtual Institute and in partnership with the World Bank, the African Development Bank and the International Trade Centre, organised a workshop on “Policies and Instruments for Successful Exports’’. The workshop was geared towards capacity building in areas related to policies and instruments in international trade, to better enable policy makers, trade analysts and exporters face the challenges and take advantage of opportunities as a result of the current financial crisis. The resource persons included experts from UNCTAD, University of Mauritius, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, World Bank, African Development Bank and International Trade Centre.

Visit at the Chrysalide Centre

Following the talk entitled “Awareness Campaign on the Psychological & Health Effects of Drug Abuse”, UoM students and the PR staff visited the Chrysalide Rehabilitation Centre for women drug addicts. Through exchanges held with the residents, the students have been exposed to real life experiences and to the terrible effects of drug abuse and they expressed their wish to participate in upcoming awareness campaigns.

Participation of UoM in the Project ‘‘African Universities develop strategies addressing the implications of globalization” under the EDULINK Programme

The target group of the project comprised university leaders from eight African countries that are part of the ACP group: Congo, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Tanzania and Uganda. The project aimed at mobilising as much evidence and high level expertise as possible to help the top management in these eight universities as they develop and adopt strategies that respond effectively to the globalisation of tertiary education.

A self-assessment document of the University of Mauritius with respect to globalisation was submitted as part of the Project. A seminar held from 18 to 21 May 2009 was organised by Maastricht University in the Netherlands through MUNDO, and was supported by the ACP Group through the EDULINK programme. There were some 26 participants, with representatives from eight African Universities. The representative of the University of Mauritius delivered a presentation on the ‘Assessment of the Capacity Strengths and Weaknesses of the University of Mauritius with respect to Globalisation’ during the seminar.

The SANBio Steering Committee approved the application to designate the University of Mauritius as SANBio Node in Bioinformatics. Memorandum of Agreement between the University of Mauritius and the University of Cape Town

Both UCT and UoM have agreed to continue to co-operate and collaborate and work together in providing medical education to students from Mauritius and in addition explore a number of cooperative activities including curriculum development, staff exchange, joint research and material exchanges, the possibility of joint meetings and professional training in the workplace.

Major sports activities organised by the Sports Unit of the University

The “Universiades des Iles de l’Océan Indien” or Inter-Island University Games was an initiative among the University of Mauritius, l’Université de la Réunion and l’Université d’Antananarivo.

The first edition of the Games was scheduled to be held at l’Université d’Antananarivo in June 2009. Due to the volatile political situation prevailing in Madagascar at that time, the University of Mauritius was proposed as alternative venue.

Following the non-confirmation of l’Université d’Antananarivo to participate in the first edition of the Games, the latter was held as a Sport Exchange between the University of Mauritius and l’Université de la Réunion.

The exchange was held on the UoM Campus. The financial and logistical support provided by the Ministry of Youth & Sports to the University of Mauritius has greatly contributed to the good organisation of the Sports Exchange, which proved to be a success.

The aim of the workshop was to promote teaching and research at tertiary level and to explore opportunities/avenues of collaboration with European Union, the Indian Ocean Commission and l’AUF. Participants were provided with information which could guide them to submit project under proposals coming from EU and l’AUF. Project Board Meeting and Visit from Bradford University

The 2nd Project Board for the project “Employability, Entrepreneurship and Social Enterprise” was held on 29th June 2009 in the presence of the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof. J. Lucas, and the Project Director, Mr. D. Jamookeeah, from the University of Bradford. Members took note about the progress achieved so far and the activities on schedule were discussed.

A workshop on WBL as planned on the activity framework for the Entrepreneurship Project, was conducted by the Project Director. The workshop aimed at disseminating WBL to potential employers and preparing industry people to take up the mentorship role on eventual students’ placements.

Two focus group interviews were carried out in view of making the WBL impact assessment. Prof J. Lucas and Mr. David Jamookeeah interviewed a group of students that had benefited from the WBL experience last year. The group sampled consisted of students from the five Faculties. Their appreciations, suggestions and problems encountered were discussed. The second focus group interview involved trained mentors coming from various sectors of the industry involving both public and private organizations to get their views, comments and suggestions on shouldering their mentorship roles.

To gather further data for the WBL Impact Assessment, a questionnaire was also designed to target the whole cohort of students that had benefited from WBL last year. The questionnaire will be distributed to all the students involved.

On 23 June 2009 Cisco Networking Academy students from Mauritius participated in National NetRiders Contest.

The competition was open to currently active Academy students who had completed CCNA 4. A total of 11 top students entered the national round, all from the University of Mauritius.

Modular PBX Telephone System

In June 2008, a contract amounting to Rs6, 586,500.00 had been awarded to Mauritius Telecom for the supply, installation, commissioning and support of a new Modular PBX Telephone System that would cater for 656 digital extensions and 32 analogue exchange lines. The new Modular PBX Telephone System is fully operational since 29 June 2009.

AFD Funding for Logistics

The UoM was informed that the Agence Française de Developpement has funded the Logistics project, for a total project value of € 202,215.

This project will be run in partnership with the Université du Havre (France) and MEXA. CPDL will be the focal point, with academics from the Faculty of Law and Management, the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Social Studies and Humanities.

The project aims at building capacity in the area of Logistics with a view to enhancing competitiveness and improving our logistics index in the port sector.

Information Kiosk

The primary function of the Information kiosk, which is located in front of the Paul Octave Wiehe Auditorium, is to provide necessary information to all students and visitors relating to enrolment of programmes, various functions and other activities. The Information Kiosk was built in-house at a total cost of
Rs200, 000.The construction works started in May 2009 and the Information Kiosk is operational since July 2009.

Student Population

The University of Mauritius is facing an increasing demand for enrolment on its programme of studies and each year all efforts are made to increase intake.  Figures show an increase of 30% in new admissions this year compared to the last academic year.

The present student population is 9800, including 3940 new admissions.
