Awareness Talk on Pranic Healing for Personal Energy Development & Stress Management
By: Acharya - Master Daniel Gorgonia
Pranic Healingis a highly evolved and tested system of energy medicine developed by Grand-Master ChoaKok Sui that utilizes prana to balance, harmonize and transform the body's energy processes. Pranic Healing is a simple yet powerful & effective system of no-touch energy healing. It is based on the fundamental principles that the body is a self-repairing living entity that possesses the ability to heal itself and that the healing process is accelerated by increasing this life force that is readily available from the sun, air and ground to address physical & emotional imbalances. Master ChoaKok Sui says "Life Energy or prana is all around us. It is pervasive; we are actually in an ocean of Life Energy. Based on this principle, a healer can draw in Pranic Energy or Life Energy from the surroundings." There are six steps to this healing system. You are all welcomed to come and learn more about:

Abstract:
'Cost Effective Lead Discovery and Development- An Alternative Approach'
Natural products are highly complex gene products and their rich stereochemical characteristics make them valuable templates for exploring novel molecular diversity. They include a wide range of therapeutic agents like anti-cancer, anti-fungal, immunosuppressive, anti-malarial, anti-viral, and cholesterol lowering drugs, etc. Between 2005 to 2007, thirteen natural products or their derived derivatives drugs were approved by FDA for clinical use. Modern drug development is a very lengthy and expensive procedure and furthermore most of the drugs developed are largely on commercial basis rather than the human needs based and result in a major out breaks of many diseases neglected by the pharmaceutical sector. This situation would require a paradigm shift in the thinking which involve for the effective utilization of the indigenous knowledge and resources. Natural products and their traditional uses can play a very important role in drug development for poor man diseases by researchers of developing world. In this lecture, examples of scientific work to prove that it is possible to discover potential drug molecules in least cost and will emphasize that knowledge-based research on the medicinal plants is a key to discover potential drug candidates at low cost.

Being Muslim in Western Countries: Identity, Acculturation and Psychological Adaptation
By: Professor Colleen Ward Victoria University of Wellington New Zealand Date: 20th October 2011 Time: 12 00- 13 00 hrs Venue: Engineering Lecture Theatre 1 (ELT1), FoE Organised by: Psychology Unit, (Faculty of Social Studies and Humanities) Abstract: The presentation draws from a series of studies undertaken with the Muslim community in New Zealand and Muslim youth abroad. First, the importance of religious identity for the psychological well-being of Muslim women in New Zealand is examined. Survey findings show that psychological identity as Muslim and religious practices, including wearing hijab, all positively influence well-being, although each of these facets of identity operate in different ways. Second, our research with Muslim youth shows that they aspire not only to retain their religious and ethnic identities, but also to be like other New Zealanders, and that this "integrated" approach to acculturation is associated with positive psychological outcomes. The strategies used by young Muslims to achieve integration and "balance" are further explored in qualitative research combining data from interviews, focus groups and identity mapping. Finally, it is argued that the success that young Muslims have in attaining "balance" and psychological. Finally, it is argued that the success that young Muslims have in attaining "balance" and psychological well-being is partially determined by the societies in which they live; more specifically, a (perceived) multicultural environment and positive attitudes toward immigrants foster positive adaptation in youth. These results are based on: a) comparative surveys with young Muslims in New Zealand and the United Kingdom and b) multi-level modelling with societal-level archival values and attitude data from nine countries and individual-level survey data from young Muslims in the International Comparative Study of Ethno-cultural Youth.

Haunted by History: The Life and Afterlife of Gandhi in Popular Cinema
by
Prof. Makarand R Paranjape ICCR Chair in Indian Studies, South Asian Studies Programme, NUS Professor of English, JNU
Date: 16 June 2011 Time: 15.00 - 16.00 hrs Venue: R Burrenchobay Lecture Theatre (RBLT) Organised by: Department of English, FSSH
ABSTRACT: This talk examines how Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi is portrayed in popular cinema. I take up for my discussion the two most significant of such portrayals, Richard Attenborough's Gandhi (1982) and Rajkumar Hirani's Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006). Not only do these two dissimilar representations symbolize the difference between Hollywood and Bollywood, but, as I shall try to suggest, they also highlight the connections between the life and the afterlife of the Mahatma, between history and mythmaking, between idealization and action, in brief between two ways of reading and doing Gandhi in our world. Makarand R. Paranjape is a Professor of English at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, on deputation as ICCR Chair in Indian Studies at NUS. His latest books include two monographs, Altered Destinations: Self, Society, and Nation in India (2009) and Another Canon: Indian Texts and Traditions in English (2010).

Date: 9 June 2011 Time: 11.00 hrs Venue: Lecture Theatre 1 (LT1) Organised by: Department of Physics, Faculty of Science Abstract: In Einstein's theory of General Relativity, the gravitational force is replaced by a curving of space-time. The three microscopic forces arise from force-carrying particles in Quantum Field Theory. A unified description of nature requires a synthesis of General Relativity and Quantum Field Theory. The difficulties in achieving this unification are discussed, and the most promising candidate for this unified theory, String Theory, is described.

Language and Religion: Is English a Judeo- Christian Language?
Date: 11 February 2011
Time: 16.00 hrs
Venue: Sir Edward Lim Fat Engg. Tower - ELT II
Organised by: Faculty of Social Studies and Humanities
ABSTRACT:
This paper will question the relationship between language and religion by critically examining the position that English is a Judeo-Christian language (e.g. see Wierzbicka, 2001). Using a World Englishes framework, this paper will argue that the English language has been localized and nativized in different ways around the world, leading to shifts in its 'core' semantics. This shift – a result of a process of resementicization – suggests that there is no intrinsic relationship between language and religion. This finding has considerable implications for work in the area of language policy and practice, language teaching, as well as on our understanding of how language works and how it functions in society.

PUBLIC LECTURE - 12 Nov 2010
Tenzing Norgay's Four FlagsTenzing Norgay's Four Flags
by Professor Stephen Slemon Associate Chair, (Research) English & Film Studies University of Alberta
Date: 12 November 2010 Time: 16.00 hrs Venue: Lecture Theatre II (NAC) Organised by: Department of English Studies, Faculty of Social Studies and Humanities Abstract This paper seeks to understand the cultural semiotics of a single moment: 11.30 a.m. on May 29, 1953, as Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary stand triumphant atop Chomolungma - Mount Everest - the Rooftop of the World. The moment marks the apex of Empire, but also its end. And it marks the turning point of mountaineering itself: from summit nationalism into media spectacle and consumer fetishization. My argument is that within Tenzing's principled mountain-top stance one might find a model for cross-cultural reciprocity and social partnership that dominant Western culture has yet to learn.

Functional Food Ingredients for gut health:evolving thinking and future prospects

ABSTRACT
Functional food ingredients for gut health: evolving thinking and future prospects
Prof. R.A. Rastall, Department of Food and Nutritional Sciences, The University of Reading, PO Box 226, Whiteknights, Reading, RG6 6AP.
The idea that the vastly complex microbial ecosystem in the human colon has a profound impact on health is now gaining widespread acceptance in the scientific community and with the food and healthcare industries. Recent research is illuminating the intricate interactions between microbes in the colon, their metabolites and human metabolism.
Consequent to this, there is increasing interest in the development of functional food ingredients to modulate the colonic microbiota and its metabolic profile to promote health. The traditional means to achieve this has been by the administration of live bacterial supplements, or probiotics. Whilst there is accumulating evidence that specific, carefully selected bacterial strains can have health benefits, it is not possible to bring about large changes in the colonic microbiota this way. Twelve years ago the concept of prebiotics was introduced. These are food ingredients, supplements or components that escape digestion in the small intestine and reach the colon largely intact. They are then selectively fermented by health-positive members of the colonic microbiota. All recognised prebiotics are carbohydrates with fructo-oligosaccharides, inulin and galacto-oligosaccharides being the only prebiotics on the European market. There are a much wider range of oligosaccharides recognised as prebiotic in Japan and many more are being investigated for their potential.
Much of the early work in this area has focused on increasing the relative populations of bifidobacteria and lactobacilli. These are non-pathogenic species with a range of recognised health-positive attributes including inhibition of intrinsic and extrinsic pathogens, modulation of immunity and synthesis of vitamins. The health attributes of these organisms are still being explored in the laboratory and in human volunteer trials. Recent thinking, however, has focussed increasingly on the metabolites produced by the colonic microbiota and the impact of these metabolites on health is currently being studied. This widening of emphasis is stimulating debate over the definition of prebiotics.
The evolving view of prebiotic function, coupled with new insights into the structure-function relationships in prebiotic oligosaccharides is providing opportunities for development of novel functional carbohydrates. Enzyme-based technologies are being brought to bear on the challenge of manufacturing enhanced forms of prebiotic food ingredient.
This talk will examine the evolving view of what is meant by a prebiotic and examine the prospects for development of functionally enhanced carbohydrates.
