Dean’s Message

It gives me immense pleasure to welcome you at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Mauritius. It is indeed a pleasant coincidence that the Faculty was established in the same year of independence of the country in 1968. The Faculty has, over the last five decades, played a vital role in capacity building and addressing research needs in engineering for a secure and sustainable future.

The mission of the Faculty is to provide quality education in line with international norms and standards at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, to develop excellence in research, to foster industry/faculty partnerships and to contribute to the development and application of technology for the advancement and welfare of the community at large. We are committed to an inclusive model of knowledge creation and dissemination where research and scholarship are highly valued. In addition, the Faculty has a proven track record of engagement with industry and governmental institutions in an advisory capacity and through research and consultancy projects.

As at date (August 2018), the Faculty of Engineering occupies the largest share of the market for engineering education in Mauritius. The Faculty has produced some 55 PhD holders, 3255 engineers and 1225 of technician grade. Currently, the Faculty offers a wide range of four year BEng (Hons) programmes which are recognized by the Council of Registered Professional Engineering (CRPE) for entry into the practice of engineering. All the programmes have been designed with a blend of theory, practicals and research or industry-based projects. The four-year programmes allow our students to develop all the competences expected of an engineer at the entry point of their career. We equally offer three-year BSc and MSc programmes in niche areas.

The year 2012 marked a new milestone for the Faculty when it decided to embark on a project for the accreditation of its four-year engineering programmes in line with the requirements prescribed by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA). ECSA being a member of the Washington Accord, provides a benchmark for international recognition of engineering qualifications. We are grateful to ECSA, academic colleagues from South Africa and also to the Institution of Engineers Mauritius (IEM) and the CRPE for their continual collaboration and support in this venture. The Faculty has targeted 2020 for its first batch of students from accredited programmes to graduate. Moreover, the Faculty is supportive to the IEM project/initiative for Mauritius to become signatory to the Washington Accord. These two projects aim at positioning Mauritius as a globally recognized provider of engineering education in the world.

Accreditation involves inter alia processes, procedures, appropriate infrastructure, administrative/financial support, competent academic and technical staff, and most importantly ensuring that the graduates meet prescribed competency standards. We are blessed to have it all, as team, in the Faculty. We take pride in our Staff and Students and welcome you to visit us.
