A Dialogue Meeting on Tourism leads to fruitful discussions

The Knowledge Transfer Office, in joint collaboration with the International Centre for Sustainable Tourism and Hospitality, organised its 1st Anniversary celebrations on the 7th of December 2016. The guest of honour for the event, Honourable Mr Etienne Sinatambou, Minister of Technology, Communication and Innovation, who launched the UoM Doctoral Graduates Booklet. The function was held in the Council and Senate Room, NAC.

The Minister highlighted KTO’s crucial role in stimulating Public-Private-Academic partnerships, which will pave the way to innovation by including research in strategy making. To mark the 1st Anniversary of KTO, a brochure of KTO’s achievements since its inception in October 2016 was also launched during the event.

In order to provide visibility to the research and expertise of UoM researchers, a Dialogue Meeting on Sustainable Tourism and Hospitality was held in the presence of eminent personalities from insititutions such as the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority, Board of Investment amongst others. For the occasion, Mr Claude Narain, Senior Training and External Relations Adviser, Constance Group, laid emphasis on the ever-changing needs of the Tourism sector and the dynamisms it entails for the operators.

“Further involvement of the industry in collaborative research projects enables the research output generated to be of relevance to the operators, which can use this information in strategy formulation or even aid the government in policymaking.” Said Mr Claude Narain. He added that the joint collaboration of various stakeholders is imperative to achieving these goals and ensuring the sustainable development of the sector.

The high level discussions from the part of the panel members and the participants to the Dialogue Meeting led to different perspectives on how the tourism industry evolved over the years and to what should be expected in the decades to come. The changing needs of tourists and how their demands have become more volatile, the emergence of smart tourism, the development of niche markets as well as better managing resources from the public as well as private sector perspective to include the community were all themes that were raised during the event.
