Confucius Institute at the University of Mauritius Hosts the Lantern Festival Gala, March 2026

On March 6, the Confucius Institute at the University of Mauritius, in collaboration with the Students’ Union of the University of Mauritius, hosted a vibrant Lantern Festival celebration entitled “Welcoming Blessings in the Year of the Horse”. The event brought together distinguished guests, faculty, students, and members of the public to experience the richness of Chinese culture and the spirit of the festival.

In her opening remarks, Mrs. Sharda Rekhadevi Issur-Goorah, Registrar of the University of Mauritius, noted that the auditorium was illuminated not only by lanterns but also by friendship, learning, and cultural exchange. She highlighted the Lantern Festival as a time of joy, reunion, and hope, emphasizing that such events build meaningful bridges between Mauritius and China, between tradition and modernity, and among people. She also praised the collaboration between the Confucius Institute and the Students’ Union and commended students for showcasing their talents and growing engagement with the Chinese language and culture.

Mr. Yang Jun, Cultural Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy, described the Lantern Festival as the grand finale of the Chinese New Year, symbolizing harmony, reunion, and good fortune. He noted that the event formed part of the broader “Happy Chinese New Year” celebrations, reflecting the strong and enduring cultural ties between China and Mauritius. Emphasizing that culture is a powerful bond between peoples, he mentioned the Confucius Institute’s important role in promoting language and cultural exchange and expressed appreciation for the continued support of all partners in strengthening bilateral friendship.

The event featured a wide variety of performances, including a lively lion dance, traditional Chinese dances such as Ke Tan, Sheng Sheng Man, Spring in March, and Tea-Picking Dance, as well as songs like Sending the Moonlight, Jasmine Flower, and As You Wish. A Chinese-Indian dance medley and a fashion show added a vibrant display of cultural diversity and fusion.

Traditional arts were also showcased, including Chinese calligraphy, an erhu solo Dream Chaser, and a Tai Chi performance, all highlighting the elegance and depth of Chinese culture.

The event concluded with a poetry recitation by all members of the Confucius Institute, expressing deep appreciation for Chinese heritage, and bringing the celebration to a warm and meaningful close.

Filled with applause and festive spirit, the gala offered an immersive cultural experience to all staff, students and members of the public present.
