Experience as an observer at the Chinese Bridge Competition

I had the great honour of travelling to China as an observer, from the Confucius Institute of the University of Mauritius, for the Chinese Bridge Competition 2026, bringing together participants from approximately 140 countries. The experience was both educational and transformative, allowing me to witness how language can foster international friendship and cultural understanding.
The Chinese Bridge Competition was a particularly inspiring experience. Meeting young people from different parts of the world and communicating through Mandarin demonstrated how the Chinese language truly serves as a bridge between cultures. It enabled us to share our histories, traditions and values while learning to appreciate our differences and similarities.
The programme also allowed us to discover China’s rich heritage. Visiting the Great Wall of China, the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace, Xiamen and Gulangyu Island provided unforgettable cultural experiences. We also had the opportunity to attend a robotics conference, giving us an insight into China’s technological development and innovation.
Beyond the educational aspects, this journey represented significant personal growth. For many of us, including myself, it was our first experience travelling independently. Adapting to a new environment and meeting people from diverse backgrounds strengthened my confidence, independence and open-mindedness.
I am deeply grateful to the organising committee, volunteers and everyone who contributed to making this journey possible. Their dedication, kindness and hospitality made the experience truly memorable. I return home with unforgettable memories, new friendships and renewed motivation to continue learning Chinese.
