The 24th “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign University Students and the 18th “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign Secondary School Students – Mauritius Preliminary Round, April 2025
On April 5, the preliminary round of the 24th “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students and the 18th “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign Secondary School Students in Mauritius was successfully held at the University of Mauritius. The event was hosted by the Chinese Embassy in Mauritius and organized by the Confucius Institute at the University of Mauritius.
This year’s competition attracted 44 contestants from Mauritian universities and secondary schools, including 22 secondary school students and 22 university students. Compared with previous years, the scale was significantly larger, fully demonstrating the local youth’s enthusiasm for learning Chinese and their deep interest in Chinese culture.
The preliminary competition consisted of three parts: self-introduction, reading aloud of prepared texts, and oral Q&A. During the self-introduction segment, contestants shared their learning experiences, how they started studying Chinese, and their admiration and love for Chinese culture. In the reading segment, participants showcased solid Chinese character recognition and accurate pronunciation and tones. In the oral Q&A section, they discussed topics such as hobbies, daily life, and future aspirations. Their fluency, clarity of thought, and confident expression reflected their strong Chinese language and communication skills. In this intense yet friendly competition, contestants not only demonstrated their linguistic abilities but also their respect for and appreciation of diverse cultures.
After careful evaluation by the panel of judges, six outstanding contestants from both the university and secondary school groups stood out and successfully advanced to the finals, which will be held in June. Teachers from the Confucius Institute will provide systematic pre-final training to help the finalists further improve and showcase a higher level of Chinese proficiency.
Let us look forward to the brilliant performances of the 12 finalists in the upcoming finals as they continue to share the stories of Mauritian youth and their “Chinese Dream,” and write a new chapter in people-to-people and cultural exchanges between China and Mauritius.
