Donation of books by Charhar Institute, People’s Republic of China, to Confucius Institute at University of Mauritius - 11 April 2018

On 11th of April 2018, a delegation from Charhar Institute visited Confucius Institute at University of Mauritius for the second time. Charhar Institute is a non-governmental think tank on diplomacy and international relations. The Senior Diplomat and Secretary-General of Charhar Institute, Mr Zhang Guobin, headed the delegation. The second visit from Charhar Institute is supported by the Prime Minister’s Office of Mauritius, the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in the Republic of Mauritius, and 21st Century Maritime Silk Road Indian Ocean Islands Foundation, Mauritius. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the independence of Mauritius, the country hosted the “1st CHINA -AFRICA PEACE & DEVELOPMENT FORUM” and the key speakers were from Charhar Institute. The delegation from Charhar Institute also visited the Confucius Institute at University of Mauritius. The two Directors of CI-UoM held a welcoming meeting and Associate Professor Naraindra Kistamah, Mauritian Director of CI-UoM, hosted the meeting. He expressed a warm welcome and hearty thanks to Charhar Institute for the generous donation of books. He said that these books will greatly aid the learning of Mandarin language and further the dissemination of the Chinese culture around the island. The donation would strengthen the library’s collection of books and in the long-term, the library at CI-UoM may serve well as a research center for aspirants to know more about China and its culture. The Director also thanked the Secretary-General for the offer of two scholarships to students of CI-UoM. 

The Chinese Director of Confucius Institute, Associate Professor Tan Xudong, presented the letter of thanks on behalf of University of Mauritius and the Vice-Chancellor of UoM. He thanked all the people present and, otherwise, for the assistance provided to CI-UoM for its smooth operation.

On the 12th of April, Associate Professor Tan Xudong attended the 1st China -Africa Peace & Development Forumon “Public Diplomacy and China – Mauritius (Africa) Relation”. He delivered a speech at the conference about the role of Confucius Institute as a platform or a window for the promotion of cultural and academic exchanges between the two countries.
