Department of Mathematics

Overview of Department

The Department of Mathematics comprises of ten academics, and two non-academic staff who are committed to excellence in teaching, research and service. We provide a foundation of Mathematics for all undergraduate students as well as specialized programs for graduate students. We discover, develop, apply and disseminate Mathematics and Statistics. We have produced several PhD students and continue to promote research in fundamental and applied areas of Mathematics. Since 2017, the Department has 5 staff members being part of the Pole of Research excellence (PRE), namely, Financial Mathematics and Risk. The PRE focuses its research on challenging problems concerning the pricing of financial market derivative products, on the development of tools for quantitative risk management and the analysis of financial time series.

The Department of Mathematics will be known for our commitment to students and our dedication to achieve the highest standards of excellence in all aspects of teaching, research and service. The department shall ensure that students receive the training of international standard in mathematical sciences so as to optimise on its research potential. The department will build and maintain nationally and internationally recognized expertise in core, as well as emerging, areas of mathematics and statistics. We will actively promote multidisciplinary scientific activity and partnerships as we develop our national and international reputation as a leader in interdisciplinary research and outreach.

The aim of the Department is to provide students with a solid background in the multi-faceted discipline of mathematics and equip them with the analytical skills required by many jobs, whether administrative or executive works. Graduates may find employment as financial/risk analysts, actuaries, financial engineers, financial planners in banks, investment houses and insurance companies. All the programmes offered include computer programming tools that will enable students to pursue further studies in advanced computer science and computational Mathematics. By continually striving towards achieving excellence in research and teaching, the department will continue to prepare students for a professional career in research and/or teaching both locally and overseas.
