The Faculty puts a strong emphasis on quality education and research. We are geared towards the total development of students and preparing them to be competent autonomous health service providers as well as teamplayers. Housing two main departments, theĀ  Department of Medicine and The Department of Health Sciences, the new faculty aims to contribute to the advancement of health and the progress of the country through innovative curricular approaches, effective health care services and relevant research work.

  • Develop NEW undergraduate and postgraduate educational programmes that are innovative, sustainable, progressive, responsive, student centered and practice focused
  • Be recognized as a leader in selected research areas nationally and internationally
  • Recruit, retain and train the best students and faculty
  • Need to strengthen existing and target new strategic relationships

  • Ensure that the FMHS works in line with the appropriate governance and infrastructure

We are committed to improving the well-being of individuals, families, communities, and populations through diverse programmes, collaborative research, and strong partnerships. Our curriculums emphasize problem-based, evidence-based and practice-based learning to enhance the students' acquisition of integrated knowledge, improve their problem solving skills as well as improve their abilities in clinical reasoning. Our students also also involved in various community outreach programmes aiming to bring our faculty and relevant health services closer to the community.

At our faculty, we also strive to build on partnerships with industry/hospitals and the different ministries to provide early clinical exposure and patient contact. The Faculty offers courses, training, and research opportunities in a variety of scientific and clinical disciplines. We have been pioneering by offering courses of national relevance in fields like Biomedical Sciences, Nutritional Sciences, and Rehabilitative Sciences. By affiliating SSR Medical College and Polytechnic Mauritius with our faculty and UoM, we are already establishing ourselves as the premier education provider in Medicine and Health Sciences.

Our graduates have been contributing to sustaining the health care system in Mauritius, especially during the Covid lockdown period. As a new faculty, we know we face a big challenge, we know the road will be rough but our focus remains the quality of our teaching and research. This is an exciting time for Medicine and Health Sciences and the creation of our faculty sends a strong message to the whole population.

Medicine and Health Sciences have come a long way from being a small Department set up in 1989 to a full-fledged Faculty. We are now dedicated to establishing our Faculty as a reference in medicine and health science education as well as research locally, regionally and globally.
