GENERAL INFORMATION

Civil engineering is a broad engineering discipline which includes major specialised areas of practice such as: structural engineering, water and waste water engineering, geotechnical engineering, transportation engineering, and construction management engineering.

Civil engineering affects many of our daily activities: the building we live and work in, the transportation facilities we use, the water we drink, the drainage and sewerage systems that are necessary to our health, our well being and the environment.

The Department of Civil Engineering has been offering courses at Diploma and Degree levels over the last twenty years. Postgraduate research is also carried out, mainly thorugh MPhil and Ph.D projects. Since the last four years the Department has embarked on taught Masters courses. The Department maintains an active link with industries, through industrial training for Level 3 students, consultancy services, and collaboration of practising engineers in the servicing of courses on a part-time basis.

PRINCIPAL AREAS OF EXPERTISE

Research work is carried out usually in collaboration with both provate and governmental institutions, in the following fields, namely;

  • Hydrology & Water Resources
  • Geotechnical Engineering
