The Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Mauritius is one of the oldest departments. It was known as the Department of Sugar Technology during the days when sugar manufacturing was the main economic pillar of the country. The Department has thereafter significantly evolved and developed from its parent scope of activities related to ‘Sugar Technology’, then through ‘Chemical and Sugar Engineering’ to today as ‘Chemical and Environmental Engineering’. This transition was necessary in order to adapt with the contemporary needs to continue progressing and contributing, both nationally and internationally.

Chemical Engineering is a discipline which integrates within many areas of science and technology. Chemical engineers are responsible for the conception and design of processes for the purpose of production, transportation and transformation of raw materials into desired products. In simple terms, Chemical Engineering involves the conversions of raw materials into valuable products on an industrial scale in a sustainable manner. It encompasses research and development in the laboratory followed by an implementation of the process and technology at a commercial-scale of production.

Chemical Engineering is a rewarding and challenging discipline. As the number of chemical process and manufacturing industries have risen globally, the demand for more chemical engineering graduates and professional chemical engineers, both in research and development and in the industry, have been on the rise. We invite you to join us in this journey.
