Mission: Contribute to enhancing the health of the population by providing medical manpower of high quality through undergraduate medical and postgraduate medical programmes and engaging in medical research that is responsive to the needs of the country.

Overview: The Department of Medicine, was created in August 2004, with medically qualified academic staff of the former Department of Health and Medical Sciences, Faculty of Science and medically qualified staff from the former SSR Centre for Medical Research and Studies.  The Department of Medicine, which was formerly part of the Faculty of Science, became part of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences set up by the University of Mauritius Council on 04 September 2020.

The Department of Medicine continued to offer a BSc (Hons) Medical Science programme since 1997 which led, after completion of the “Certificat de Deuxième Cycle des Etudes Médicales” at the Faculty of Medicine of University of Bordeaux, to the award of a MBChB degree by the University of Mauritius.   

Since 2013 the Department of Medicine offers a full-fledged undergraduate medical programme of six-year duration (MD programme in English medium) in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Wellness and the University of Geneva (Switzerland).  The first MD graduates in September 2019 have obtained their full registration with the Medical Council of Mauritius in June 2022 after undergoing pre-registration training for 18 months and passing examinations organised by the Professional Council.

The Department offered the Master of Public Health as from 2012 with training offered in the first two years by resource persons from the Imperial College, training was subsequently performed by local resource persons since 2016.  The Department will soon offer other postgraduate medical programmes of one year duration, commissioned by the Ministry of Health and Wellness (“Family Medicine”, “HIV-AIDs” programmes). 

The Department of Medicine will also offer specialization programmes of four-year duration in collaboration with the University of Bordeaux, CHU de Bordeaux, University of Reunion, CHU de La Reunion, the French Embassy in Mauritius, the Ministry of Health and Wellness (Accord Cadre de Cooperation Franco-Mauricienne) starting with postgraduate degrees in “Imagerie Médicale” and “Anesthésie-Réanimation”.

Department of Health Sciences

The Department has long been recognised for offering various allied health professional programmes - Nutritional Sciences, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Pharmacy, Sanitary Sciences, Biomedical Sciences, Medical Imaging Technology, Nursing and Sports Sciences.
