The Electrical Engineering Division was initially set up with the foundation of the School of Industrial Technology in 1968. The division became known as Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering since the early 1980s.

In the early 1970s, the Division started to offer a joint Diploma in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering to cater for the shortage of engineers in Mauritius and the growing demand for such professionals by the industry. The B.Tech/Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering course was first offered in September 1976 and it was converted to BEng (Hons) Electrical and Electronic/Communication Engineering as from 1997. At that time, students could choose their field of specialisation between Electrical and Electronic or Electronic and Communication Engineering only in their fourth year of studies, depending on their academic performance. In the same year, the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, jointly with the Mechanical and Production Engineering department started to offer the BEng (Hons) Mechatronics Engineering programme. With an increased interest from students in the BEng programmes offered by the department, in 2009, the Department started to offer BEng (Hons) Electrical and Electronic Engineering and BEng (Hons) Electronic and Communication Engineering as two separate programmes with an intake of thirty students in each programme. At that time, all the modules were yearly. In 2016, the department introduced the BEng (Hons) Telecommunication Engineering with Networking programme. In the same year, the Department embarked on a very ambitious project of aligning the BEng (Hons) Electrical and Electronic Engineering and BEng (Hons) Electronic and Communication Engineering programmes with the requirements of the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), and hence the International Engineering Alliance through the Washington Accord, and thus further enhance the quality and mobility of its graduates. The two programmes were revamped to cover the competencies, the knowledge areas and learning outcomes as prescribed by the ECSA, and all the modules were converted to semester basis. The Department will be offering three Master of Science (M. Sc) courses as from 2019. In addition, staffs of the department are engaged in supervision of students for a Master of Philosophy (M. Phil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree. The Department provides a vibrant learning environment to the students, with state of the art and well equipped laboratories. The Department makes every effort to produce graduates with all the attributes required to make a positive impact in the society.

The Department has a group of sixteen highly motivated academic staff who are passionate and committed to provide high level education to the engineers of the fourth industrial revolution. In addition, staffs are actively involved in cutting edge research in the fields of Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, Renewable Energy, Electronics, Signal Processing, Control Systems, Telecommunication Engineering, Networking, Internet of Things, amongst others and contribute to the advancement in the society. The Department strives to maintain a constant growth by forging collaborations with local partners and leading institutions globally.
