Power System  The department is actively involved in the research area of power systems. Research students are currently working on projects having a common framework in power systems, computational intelligence and optimisation. Two research thrusts of the Power Systems Pole of Research group are firstly, coordinated planning of distributed generation with emphasis on network reconfiguration, capacitors placement and distributed generation placement, and secondly, multi-objective approaches to transiently stable optimal power flow using a hybrid combination of evolutionary algorithms together with mature nonlinear programming solvers and mixed-integer linear programming techniques. Focus is also on power line communications and renewable energy systems performance.
Power Electronics Research activities are focused on the application of switch mode power converters for the control of electrical machines, the improvement of power quality and energy efficiency, and the control of power systems with distributed energy resources.
Renewable Energy Research in renewable energy is becoming increasingly crucial to meet the world's growing energy needs and demands within contemporary environmental, economic, and security constraints. The research in this area focuses on technologies for efficient and clean energy conversion and utilization, the impact of intermittent power on power system efficiency and operational reliability, irradiance and PV modelling and performance analysis, and optimization of the energy performance of buildings.
Control Engineering Control is a branch of engineering which is very often referred to as the brain/decision making process of any given system. The system can take any form but is usually represented using dynamical equations. The aim of a "control law" is to regulate or track one or more outputs and this is achieved using a range of design techniques. Uncertainty in the dynamical systems present challenges which result in sophisticated design methods including optimal and robust control, among others.
Signal Processing for Imaging and Control Signal processing is the field where real-life signals are captured and manipulated in time or frequency, so as to extract useful information, or produce other signals for controlling the behaviour of a system. Applications are numerous. In electromagnetic sensing, the scattered field from an object is measured and used to gather information on the position, size and electrical properties of the scatterer. In acoustic noise cancellation, microphone signals are picked and used to produce control signals on cancelling loudspeakers. In general, a knowledge of system theory, signal processing and scattering theory is required to embark on research in this field.
Telecommunications The field of Telecommunications covers a wide spectrum of topics such as mobile and wireless communications, error control coding, networking, real-time communications, applications and protocols development, intelligent connectivity etc. Research in this field is geared towards three main components namely physical layer signal processing, networking and telecommunications applications development. Physical layer signal processing deals with algorithms related to source coding, channel coding, modulation, pulse shaping, multiplexing, multiple access, antenna diversity etc. Research in the Networking aspect involves several challenges pertaining to software defined networks, AI based networks, ultra wideband networks, protocol layering, network management and security. With regards to telecommunications applications development, research is geared towards QoS aware video conferencing applications, intelligent softphone systems, real-time analytics, distributed servers, cloud, fog and edge computing paradigms, android telephony apps, and AI based web security applications.
Wireless and Multimedia Communications Wireless and multimedia communications are transformative technologies that have significantly changed the society over the past 50 years. The research activities in this group range from wireless signal modelling through fading channels, coding, modulation, transmission for future wireless generation networks such as 5G. The research topics are Multimedia communications: signal processing, information theory and their applications in image and video coding/processing, wavelets, joint source-channel coding. Wireless transmission techniques: space-time coding; cooperative communications; performance analysis over fading channels, channel estimation and equalization, modulation and detection techniques, Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) and Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA).
Internet of Things (IoT) and Intelligent Systems IoT is an umbrella term representing the internetworking of physical devices, vehicles, buildings and other items embedded with electronics, software, sensors, actuators, microprocessors, microcontrollers and network connectivity that enable these objects to collect and exchange data. Research in IoT at University of Mauritius focuses on three key domains:
  • Hardware and software systems: Construction of hardware and software systems that will make the IoT enabled systems intelligent and secure.
  • Analytics: Integration and analysis of the enormous streams of physical world instrumentation with all of the existing data.
  • Security: Developing pervasive sensing and analytic systems to preserve and protect user security.
